Volvo has announced that its latest models with Google built-in technology will be the first vehicles to receive the new Google Gemini AI assistant, including in Australia. The upgrade will roll out via an over-the-air software update later this year, replacing the existing Google Assistant system.

Eligible models include all XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, 2022-onwards XC60, and all 2023 model-year and newer Volvos, which feature Android Automotive OS. Gemini will offer advanced natural language interaction, deeper vehicle integration, and multi-task capabilities, such as retrieving the owner’s manual or executing complex commands by voice.

Volvo’s expanded partnership with Google allows it to test cutting-edge automotive tech before wider release. The brand says customers benefit from first access to innovations like Gemini, further enhancing Volvo’s smart vehicle ecosystem.

Google also confirmed that Gemini will soon come to Android Auto, and more third-party apps—including gaming and streaming options when stationary—will be available for cars with Google built-in.

In Australia, cars currently offering Google built-in include the full Volvo and Polestar lineups, the latest Honda Civic and Accord, and soon the facelifted Renault Captur. Globally, brands like Chevrolet, Ford, Nissan, GMC, Mitsubishi, and Renault are also integrating Google services, though many haven’t launched in Australia yet.

Meanwhile, other automakers are introducing similar AI enhancements. The Volkswagen Group and Stellantis brands are integrating ChatGPT, while the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA will feature both Google Gemini and ChatGPT via its new MB.OS system.
