Doha – When tensions between Iran and Israel escalated on June 23, leading to a sudden airspace closure over Qatar, passengers across the region faced major travel disruptions. Among them was Rashid Abbas, a Dubai-based travel executive, whose routine business trip to Doha took a dramatic turn as Iran launched missiles near a US base in Qatar.
Speaking to media, Abbas praised the swift crisis management by Qatar Airways and Hamad International Airport (HIA), who provided timely assistance, free meals, and even hotel accommodation to stranded passengers.
“They really looked after everyone at the terminal. From lounge access to visa processing—everything was well-coordinated,” said Abbas.
Flight Delays and Rising Tensions in Doha
Abbas was scheduled to fly back to Sharjah via Qatar Airways at 6:05 PM. However, moments before departure, the pilot announced delays due to a lack of clearance from Air Traffic Control (ATC). By 7:30 PM, chaos unfolded as passengers witnessed missiles streaking across the Doha skyline.
“It was surreal—we saw the same scenes everyone in the city saw that night,” he said.
With no luggage, only passports and essentials in hand, Abbas and his colleague were redirected to the airport's Arrivals terminal for safety.
Free Food, Visas, and Smooth Handling at Hamad International Airport
Despite the heavy passenger load, Qatar Airways ensured calm and care, offering food vouchers, free lounge access, and visa-on-arrival for foreign nationals. Indian passport holders, including Abbas’s colleagues, were swiftly granted hotel access outside the airport.
“The airport is massive, but it was managed brilliantly. People were assisted professionally and respectfully,” Abbas noted.
Overnight Chaos, but Thoughtful Support
By 3 AM, his flight was officially cancelled. Abbas, who had valid travel insurance, chose not to claim hotel accommodation—leaving space for others who needed it more.
Meanwhile, his friend’s son, booked on another disrupted flight, was provided a hotel by the airline and returned safely the same night.
Abbas eventually returned to Dubai the next evening via flydubai.
Qatar Airways Issues Official Response
In a statement released early Tuesday, Qatar Airways confirmed flight resumptions as airspace reopened. The airline emphasized its commitment to supporting passengers throughout the crisis:
“We are working closely with government bodies and airport authorities to restore normal operations. Additional ground staff were deployed to assist affected travellers with care and efficiency,” said the airline.
