Ring Introduces AI-Powered Security Alerts for Enhanced Safety

Starting Wednesday, Ring is rolling out a beta feature for its U.S. and Canadian premium subscribers that uses AI to generate security alerts. The system analyzes motion events from Ring doorbells and cameras, then sends users concise text summaries highlighting key activity—such as a person or vehicle—to help them quickly assess potential threats.

The move is part of Ring’s broader push into AI-driven home security, according to CEO Jamie Siminoff, who returned to lead the company in April after stepping away in 2023. Amazon acquired Ring in 2018 for an estimated $1 billion, expanding its smart home and security offerings.

While best known for its video doorbells, Ring now offers a range of products, including security cameras, floodlights, and even drone cameras. Siminoff said the company sees "unlimited potential" for AI-powered innovations in home monitoring.

However, Ring has faced criticism over privacy concerns, particularly regarding its past partnerships with U.S. law enforcement agencies. Privacy advocates have warned that the company's Neighbors app could enable racial profiling and unchecked surveillance. In response, Ring discontinued a feature earlier this year that allowed police to request user footage directly.

The rollout comes as other tech firms grapple with AI mishaps—such as Apple’s flawed news summarization tool and Google’s inaccurate historical image generation—highlighting the challenges of deploying AI responsibly.
