Kami Rita Sherpa, a 55-year-old Nepali mountaineer, has set a world record by summiting Mount Everest for the 31st time, over three decades after his first ascent in 1994. Known globally as the “Everest Man,” Sherpa completed his latest climb on Tuesday while leading an Indian Army team, also guiding its final members to the top.

Sherpa began climbing Everest as part of commercial expeditions and has since returned almost every year. Though he downplays his record-setting achievements, he expressed pride in helping bring global attention to Nepal.

So far this season, over 500 climbers have reached Everest’s summit, with just two reported deaths. Nepal has issued 458 Everest permits this year, generating over $5 million in royalties.
