What began as a quirky character from Hong Kong has now turned into a widespread sensation in the UAE. Labubu, the mischievous figure known for its spiky hair, wide eyes, and cheeky smile, has captured the hearts and homes of residents across the country.
Labubu's presence is now seen everywhere—from toys and keychains to cakes, ice creams, and even chocolates.
Misha Fernandes, a resident of JLT, shared, “I had no idea what Labubu was until my daughter turned seven. She wanted a Labubu cake for her birthday, and when I got her one, the reaction from her and her friends was priceless. They didn’t even want to cut the cake because it looked too cute.”
Themed cakes have surged in popularity, with bakeries across the UAE, including Occasions Cakes UAE and Gateau Gourmet, frequently receiving orders for Labubu-inspired designs. These custom cakes start at Dh200, and customers can place their orders online for home delivery.
Beyond cakes, Labubu merchandise is widespread. Keychains featuring the character—ranging in price from Dh3 to over Dh300—are seen in supermarkets and discount stores, varying from plush and plastic designs to those with lights and sound effects.
“It’s not just the kids who are crazy about Labubu,” said Abdul Rahman from Muweilah. “Even I have started noticing how cute it is. We bought Labubu-shaped ice creams last week, and the kids were over the moon. It’s such a fun way to enjoy dessert.”
Labubu-themed ice creams are especially popular at the Frozen Factory, becoming a major hit at family events and birthday parties. A staff member at the Al Zahia branch mentioned that these ice creams are now among their top sellers, with parents and children often calling in advance to check availability.
Labubu soft toys have also become widely available. Plushies of various sizes—both official merchandise and locally made versions—are stocked in toy stores and supermarkets. A discount centre in Sharjah has become a go-to spot for fans, with daily demand for Labubu toys, snacks, and accessories. “We restock constantly, and still, it’s hard to keep up with the demand,” said salesman Hameed Shukur.
So what makes Labubu so appealing?
For some, it’s the character’s lively, expressive design and playful charm. For others, the social media trend plays a role, with influencers showcasing Labubu-themed collections, gifts, and decorations.
“My son carries a Labubu keychain on his school bag, and now his whole class wants one too,” said Arfa, a resident of Abu Hail. “It’s cute, harmless, and makes the kids happy.”
With its growing fan base, Labubu has evolved from a simple character into a cultural phenomenon in the UAE. Whether it’s a dessert, toy, or accessory, Labubu has become much more than just a passing trend.
