Dubai: What does it truly mean to be a Field Marshal?

The term gained attention after Pakistan elevated Army Chief General Asim Munir to Field Marshal—the highest ceremonial military title—on May 20, recognizing his leadership during Operation Banyanun Marsoos against India. He becomes only the second Pakistani to receive this honor, following General Ayub Khan in 1959.

Field Marshal is a five-star rank with no operational power, awarded for exceptional wartime service. While retired Field Marshals remain on active duty symbolically, the role is honorary and does not grant political authority. Munir’s elevation, unlike Ayub Khan’s self-promotion, was civilian-approved.

Globally, the title is rarely given. India awarded it to Generals Manekshaw and Cariappa, while British icons like Montgomery and Slim held it during WWII. Other nations have used the title to honor distinguished commanders, highlighting its symbolic prestige rather than command power.
