New Blood or Saliva Test Accurately Measures Aging and Predicts Longevity
Intrinsic capacity (IC) — the combination of an individual’s physical and mental abilities — is emerging as a powerful marker of healthy aging. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), IC includes essential functions like walking, thinking, hearing, seeing, and remembering. Maintaining these functions is vital for longevity and quality of life.
Traditionally, evaluating IC required costly and complex assessments. Now, a groundbreaking study published in Nature Aging introduces a simple, non-invasive DNA methylation test using just a drop of blood or saliva to assess intrinsic capacity and track biological aging.
Researchers analyzed data from over 1,000 individuals aged 20–102, measuring DNA methylation — chemical tags that influence gene activity — alongside five critical domains of aging: cognition, locomotion, sensory functions, psychological health, and vitality. This data helped build the DNAm IC “epigenetic clock,” which accurately predicts all-cause mortality and overall health.
People with high DNAm IC scores had better lung function, faster walking speed, higher bone density, and self-reported better health. Remarkably, they also lived an average of 5.5 years longer than those with lower IC scores.
Experts say this test could revolutionize how we track aging and personalize interventions. Dr. Thomas M. Holland of RUSH University noted:
“DNAm IC shows how well your body is aging compared to your actual age — a powerful tool for preventing chronic disease and guiding healthy lifestyle changes.”
Diet and lifestyle play a key role in supporting intrinsic capacity. The study found that individuals with high IC scores often consumed more omega-3-rich oily fish and limited their sugar intake to recommended levels. Omega-3s support brain function, reduce inflammation, and influence gene expression. Excess sugar, by contrast, accelerates inflammation and cellular aging.
Experts recommend the following science-backed strategies to boost intrinsic capacity and extend healthy life years:
- Adopt a Mediterranean or MIND diet rich in whole foods, healthy fats, and antioxidants
- Engage in regular aerobic, strength, and balance exercises
- Stay cognitively and socially active to support brain and emotional health
- Manage stress and chronic conditions to reduce systemic inflammation
According to experts, the DNAm IC test represents a major step forward in functional aging science, offering new possibilities in longevity medicine, preventive geriatrics, and precision health.
“DNAm IC doesn’t just predict lifespan — it helps optimize your healthspan,” Dr. Holland concluded.
