Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X (formerly Twitter), announced her resignation on Wednesday after a turbulent two years leading the social media platform under Elon Musk’s ownership. Her departure comes just a day after Musk’s AI startup, xAI, sparked widespread outrage over antisemitic content and comments praising Hitler.
Yaccarino did not provide a specific reason for stepping down in her official statement. "When @elonmusk and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime... I'm immensely grateful to him for entrusting me," she posted on X, expressing her support for the team moving forward.
Yaccarino was widely seen as a stabilizing force brought in to restore advertiser confidence after Musk’s takeover of Twitter in 2022, which included mass layoffs and the reinstatement of controversial figures. As a seasoned advertising executive from NBCUniversal, she was expected to repair relationships with brands and push for legislative efforts like online child safety laws.
Despite her efforts, Yaccarino faced an uphill battle as Musk continued to stir controversy. In one notable incident, just six months into her role, Musk told advertisers who paused spending to "go [expletive] yourself" during a public event. Many in the industry, including longtime colleague Lou Paskalis, warned her that remaining aligned with Musk could damage her reputation.
“She was set up to fail from day one,” said Paskalis. “But Linda is a fighter—this was a mechanical bull she refused to let go of.”
Elon Musk acknowledged her departure with a short message on X: “Thank you for your contributions.” Neither Musk nor X has issued further comment.
Yaccarino's resignation raises fresh concerns over the platform’s leadership, advertiser relationships, and long-term sustainability—especially in light of the recent backlash against xAI. Her exit underscores the continued instability surrounding Musk’s vision for X.
