In Jeddah, King Abdulaziz University’s Scientific Endowment, in collaboration with the Center of Excellence for Advanced Materials Research and various public and private entities, has introduced the groundbreaking 'Green Spots' initiative under the slogan 'Sort It, Recycle It.' This program, launched for the 1446 AH Hajj season, aims to enhance environmental sustainability through better waste management practices at the holy sites.

The initiative encourages pilgrims and support staff to participate in sorting and separating waste at the source, striving for a cleaner environment while cultivating sustainable habits. It goes beyond cleanliness by transforming recyclables into valuable resources for local industries, thereby supporting the circular economy, boosting national production, and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.

Building on the long-running 'Let’s Go Recycling!' campaign initiated by KAU in 2012—the first structured recycling effort in Saudi Arabia—'Green Spots' continues to expand its impact through multi-sector partnerships. The campaign has already diverted hundreds of tons of consumer waste from landfills.

This Hajj season represents a significant step in engaging the public on sustainability issues, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s broader vision for urban development and eco-friendly practices.
