Media reports recently reported that all UAE residents will receive a free subscription to the paid version of the AI tool ChatGPT+, following the announcement of a major partnership between the UAE and OpenAI. However, this information is not based on official confirmation from any relevant authority and contradicts the original announcement of the partnership. According to OpenAI, the agreement with the UAE concerns expanding access to AI tools, but does not include free individual subscriptions to ChatGPT Plus, which still requires a $20 monthly subscription. The free version of ChatGPT (GPT 3.5) will remain unchanged for users in the UAE.
The partnership is expected to gradually yield results through the integration of ChatGPT tools into government, education, and health services, enabling the wider use of artificial intelligence within the country, even without subscribing to the paid version. The partnership comes as part of the Stargate UAE project, which aims to build the world's largest AI data center in Abu Dhabi.
The center, spanning 10 square miles, is being developed in collaboration with global companies such as G42, Oracle, NVIDIA, and Cisco. The facility is expected to begin operations in 2026, providing the region with massive computing power powered by nuclear, solar, and gas energy.
The confusion stemmed from some media outlets' exaggerated interpretation of the official announcement, which focused primarily on enhancing and enabling AI infrastructure, rather than providing immediate free services.
