A 53-year-old man from West Derby has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car drove into crowds celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League victory, Merseyside Police confirmed.

The incident occurred on Water Street shortly after 6:00 PM on Bank Holiday Monday. Police reported that the driver of a Ford Galaxy bypassed a roadblock by closely following an ambulance that was attending to a medical emergency involving a suspected heart attack nearby.

Authorities say the suspect is also being held on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs. Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill stated that 65 individuals were confirmed as casualties, with 11 remaining hospitalized in stable condition.

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims clarified that the incident is not being treated as terrorism. She explained, “The roadblock was briefly lifted to allow emergency services access, which the suspect exploited to enter the restricted area.”

Among the injured were children, with 50 people receiving hospital treatment in the aftermath of the crash.
