Instagram has announced a new round of DM (direct messaging) updates, reinforcing its growing focus on private messaging as user behavior continues to shift. With a significant rise in content sharing via DMs, Instagram is enhancing its messaging features to support this trend.
DM Usage Surpasses Feed Sharing
According to Instagram Head Adam Mosseri, users are now sharing “way more photos and videos into DMs” than through posts or Stories, describing this shift as a “paradigm change” in how people interact on the platform. To better support this evolving user behavior, Instagram is rolling out several updates designed to improve engagement and convenience within Instagram direct messages.
Voice Message Transcription Now Available in Instagram DMs
One of the standout features is the new voice message transcription functionality. This allows users to view a written transcript of voice messages directly within the chat, thanks to a new “View transcription” button below each audio message.
“Now when you receive a voice message in DMs, you can view a transcription of the audio before, during, and after you play the voice message, making it easier to connect with friends even when you can’t listen to their message out loud,” Instagram explains.
This feature is particularly useful in situations where listening isn’t possible, such as in meetings or public spaces, making communication more accessible.
Audio Message Limit Increased to 5 Minutes
Instagram has also increased the maximum duration of voice messages in DMs from 1 minute to 5 minutes, allowing for longer and more expressive audio conversations. Users can now share extended audio clips, and thanks to the new transcription feature, recipients can still engage even if they can't listen.
This update, previously tested among select users, is now being rolled out universally.
New “Follow All” Button for Instagram Group Chats
In another useful update, Instagram introduces a “Follow All” option in group chats. This feature enables users to quickly follow every participant in a group conversation with a single tap, streamlining the process of staying connected.
This is especially beneficial in dynamic group chats created around specific events, interests, or communities, where not all members may already be following each other.
