Kuwait’s Ministry of Health has unveiled plans to open the country’s first skin bank and a state-of-the-art microsurgery laboratory, marking a significant advancement in its medical infrastructure.

Announced during the Second Multidisciplinary Kuwait Conference on Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Medicine, the initiative aims to enhance emergency care for severe burn victims and elevate the quality of reconstructive and plastic surgeries.

Dr. Abdullah Al Fars, Assistant Undersecretary for Supportive Medical Services, delivered the announcement on behalf of Health Minister Dr. Ahmed Al Awadhi. The new facilities will operate under the guidance of the Al Babtain Burns and Plastic Surgery Center—the nation’s only specialised centre in this field.

In 2023 alone, Al Babtain treated over 20,000 patients and performed more than 1,200 surgeries, underscoring the growing demand for advanced treatment solutions.

Dr. Ahmed Al Ali, a surgeon at the centre, highlighted that the new skin bank will store donated skin from deceased individuals to be used in life-saving procedures for burn patients. This critical resource is expected to improve survival rates and treatment effectiveness in emergency situations.

In parallel, the new microsurgery lab will enable highly precise surgical procedures, advancing capabilities in both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery and significantly improving recovery outcomes for patients.

These new medical facilities represent a major leap forward for Kuwait’s healthcare sector and signal the country’s commitment to specialised, cutting-edge medical treatment.
